November is National Novel Writing Month

November is National Novel Writing Month, also known as NaNoWriMo by frequent competitors. This internet-based competition challenges competitors to write a 50,000 word manuscript in thirty days. Contestants are allowed to plan out the story ahead of time, but they are not permitted to begin actually writing a draft until the 1st of November. This competition is designed for the people who have always wanted to write a novel but haven’t gotten around to it, and also serves the purpose of helping to make the writing process–normally a solitary endeavor–a more communal activity by linking NaNoWriMo participants all over the world. Winners, or people who get to 50,000 words, win a printable certificate and bragging rights, plus the satisfaction of having finally put pen to paper on that writing project that’s been floating around in the back of your mind for years.

Dolphin Tale

By now, I’m sure that almost everyone in the US will be familiar with the story of Whisper, a young bottlenose dolphin who was found in 2005 trapped in a crab trap. Her tail eventually had to amputated, whereupon she was fitted with a prosthetic tail. The story has recently been dramatized in the film Dolphin Tale, with Whisper playing herself. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, I would highly recommend going. It’s a wonderful, uplifting tale that will speak to anyone who has suffered a seemingly irredeemably loss.

Tame Foxes

There’s nothing remarkable about the video, until you realize that the animal the woman is holding is not a dog, but a fox. This particular fox (a Silver fox) is one of the subjects in a Russian experiment involving fox breeding that has been running continuously since 1959. Foxes normally display fear and avoidance behaviors towards humans but, starting with a group of 130 farm-bred foxes, the researchers have systematically selected and bred those foxes who were least aggressive and most interested in humans. As more and more generations were bred, the tame foxes began to act in a manner that was virtually indistinguishable from dogs. These foxes are not trained, and are only allowed a certain amount of time with humans every day to perverse the purity of the research. Personally, after watching this video, I’m ready to jet off to Russia and (assuming that I actually could purchase one, which I highly doubt) come home with a tame silver fox to add to our family.

How to Avoid Eating the Halloween Candy Before Halloween

We’ve all been there–normally, concerned with keeping our weight down and staying healthy, we don’t have candy lying around the house. (After all, the easiest way to make sure that you don’t eat something is not to have it on hand). But then October rolls around, and you buy a very large bag of candy to distribute to the kids who come knocking at your door. Since it’s such a large bag, you figure that one or two candies couldn’t hurt, and that you deserve a treat since your diet has been going so well. But then one or two candies turns into three or four, and suddenly you’ve eaten nearly the entire bag, meaning both that you need to buy more candy to hand out on Halloween and that you’re left petrified as stare into the mirror. Below is a list of ways to keep yourself from eating all of the Halloween candy before Halloween.

1. Don’t buy it until October 31st.

2. Once you’ve bought it, hide it. There is some truth to the old adage: “out of sight, out of mind.”

3. Buy candy that you don’t like. Depending upon your tastes, this may be more or less difficult to accomplish. Personally, I’m quite picky, so it’s easy to find that candy that I would never willingly consume.
