Have you been caught up in the Royal Wedding fever this week? If you live under a rock or don’t watch the news, then you might not know, but Prince William is marrying Kate Middleton on Friday. Their wedding will be broadcast around the world beginning very early on Friday morning.
So what is a family to do? Make it a family event! Your Royal Wedding party can be turned in to a mini-history lesson, a bit of culture, a bit on geography and a lot of custom. Watching endless hours of broadcast from England will teach your kids a lot about how things are done “across the pond”.
Even though the events will likely start at 4 am EST Friday, you could wake the kids up. After all, you’d keep them up late to watch a comet come through the sky that is a historical event. This is a historical event, just of a different nature.
Here’s what to do to get in the mood for the Royal Wedding:
Serve tea. Tea is the drink of choice for many Englanders, so start your morning out with a fresh cup.
Get crumpets. OK, if you aren’t a motivated baker, buying pastries from the bake shop will work too. But if you are motivated, look up crumpets to get a recipe and bake a batch the night before.
Wear comfy pajamas. It is early after all, so roll out of bed and hit the couch with your comfy pajamas, your pillows and your blankets.
Since the coverage will likely last until mid-day Friday, bring out some other snacks too. Fruit trays, cookies, granola bars…something easy and relatively mess free to eat from the couch.
Make a bingo game! Decide the night before what some buzzwords might be and make up a bingo card for each family member watching. Everyone keeps track of the card through the morning and see who wins first!
Lastly, have fun. It’s nice to have to watch a happy event on the TV instead of a sad, violent or depressing one. There’s nothing wrong with watching something happy on TV…even if it cost tens of millions of dollars!
